Scott Nevitt

May 7, 1947 — September 13, 2019

Scott Nevitt, born May 7, 1947 in Emporia, Kansas to Elmer Richard Nevitt and Florence (Watson) Nevitt, passed away on Friday, September 13, 2019 at Jefferson Community Health Center in Fairbury, Neb. Scott graduated from Emporia High School in 1965 where he excelled at cross country, track, and swimming. He attended Emporia State Teacher’s College before being drafted into the Army in 1967 and served until 1969.

Scott was proud of his military service at Fort Myer and Fort McNair in the Virginia and Washington DC area where he had several assignments including the Post Engineer Office (requisitioning and tracking  supplies for 26 Generals for their homes on base), dispatch for the Fire House, Chaplain Assistant-Accounting Clerk under Lt. Colonel Thompson, guarded the base and surrounding area of Arlington National Cemetery during the MLK riots, was escort for Congressmen and Senators during President Eisenhower’s funeral and was a guard for President Nixon’s military parade.

After being honorably discharged at the Pentagon, Scott jumped in his 1962 Chevy Impala convertible and started his way back home. He worked construction during the day and worked nights and weekends at Wagner’s Texaco in Emporia. Next to that Texaco were the College View apartments where a young college student named Charlene Brabec lived. She frequently stopped at the Texaco and that is how he met the love of his life. Scott married Charlene on April 18, 1970 in Narka, Kansas. To this union were born three children; Mike, Tina and Korey.

Scott started his professional career in retail at Gibson’s/Pamida in Emporia, then was promoted to larger stores in Emmetsburg and Spirit Lake, Iowa. He also sold homes for Great Lakes, then worked for Morrell Meats to support his family. In 1982, he moved the family to Reynolds, Nebraska and was in management for Wal-Mart and Orscheln working long days/nights until retiring in 2013, never complaining one day about work or the long hours.

Scott loved his family, teaching his grandsons life lessons, taking drives with his wife, and traveling to Colorado on family trips. He loved camping, hunting, mowing, target shooting, and building and/or fixing anything to save the family money. He had strong and calloused hands, but was an excellent artist, always loving to draw. His inner sensitivity was reflected in his italic handwriting.

Scott was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Richard, brother-in-law, Keith Woodside, and father and mother-in-law, Albert and Viola Brabec. He is survived by his wife, Charlene, two sons, Mike (Christina) Nevitt of Lincoln, Neb. and Korey (Anne) Nevitt of Lenexa, Kan.; one daughter, Tina (Jeff) Wernsman of Beatrice, Neb.; six grandsons, Noah and Drew Nevitt, Dakoda and Connor Freitag, Kameron and Nikolas Nevitt; one sister, Mary Sue (Nevitt) Brendle; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sharon and Loren Mach; many special relatives and friends.

Scott was humble, strong, and always put others before himself. Grandpa was our rock and will be missed by all.
