Richard Gile

Richard Maurice Gile was born December 27, 1930, the 8 th of nine children to Richard Carleton and Mary Esther (Currie) Gile on the family farm in Norway, Kansas. He was educated at Norway and Highland Grade Schools and graduated from Scandia High School in 1949. He enlisted into the Army on August 26, 1949. He served in two Korean Campaigns and achieved the rank of Corporal. He was awarded the Korean Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, United Nations Medal, and the Army Good Conduct Medal. Richard was honorably discharged on September 25, 1952. On September 8, 1953 Richard married Kathryn Yvonne Estes and to this union five children were born: Yvonna Sue, Kevin Douglas, Lynda Denise, Michelle Dawn, and Dana Eric. He was employed as a pipefitter and was a member of Local 441, the V.F.W., American Legion, Am-Vets, and the Korean War Veterans Association. Richard was an avid reader and was especially interested in the Civil War as his grandfather Newell Elijah Gile fought at Gettysburg as well as other battles. Richard passed from this life Monday, May 9, 2016 at the Belleville Health Care Center at the age of 85 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant sons Kevin and Dana; brothers Merrill, Lawrence, Doug, Roscoe, Newell, and Paul; and sister Opal. He will be forever remembered by his wife of 62 years, Kathryn; daughters Sue Whitmer and husband Scott, Voorhees, NJ, Denise Johnson and husband Gary, Lawrence, KS, and Michelle Larson and husband Kevin, Scandia, KS; 8 grandchildren: Evan Whitmer, Jersey City, NJ, Kirk Whitmer, Voorhees, NJ, Christopher Johnson and fiancé Kellee Chapman, Lawrence, KS, Jeremiah Johnson and wife Nicki, Cedar Falls, IA, Betsey Gallinger and husband Nick, Lawrence, KS, Dana Larson and fiancé Kayla Davis, Scandia, KS, Shanna Lindberg and husband Nathan, Formoso, KS, and Corbin Larson, Manhattan, KS; 13 great grandchildren: Bridgette, Hunter, Ethan, Owen, and Lily Johnson, Lawrence, KS, Lane and Drew Johnson, Cedar Falls, IA, Kate, Kylie, and Karoline Gallinger, Lawrence, KS, Hudson and Harlow Lindberg, Formoso, KS, and Brylee Larson, Scandia, KS; brother Clyde Gile and Suzette, Scandia, KS; numerous nieces and nephews, and a community of friends. A celebration of his life will be held Monday, May 16, 2016 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Norway, Kansas with Pastors Thomas Kamprath and Robert Frasier officiating. Family interment will be in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, rural Norway. Memorials may be made to the V.F.W., Am-Vets, American Legion, Korean War Veterans Association, Military Order of Purple Hearts, or the Salvation Army. Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home, Belleville, Kansas assisted the Gile family with these arrangements.
