Michael E. Johnson was born February 28 th , 1947 in Kansas City, Missouri to Herbert and Dorothy (Green) Johnson. He passed from this life on Monday, September 14 th, 2015 as a lifelong resident of Courtland, Kansas at the age of 68 years. Mike attended Courtland Elementary and High School and graduated in 1965. He attended Fort Hays State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Business. While attending FHSU, he met Karen Anderson, whom he married in 1969. Together they had three children, Travis Michael, Tanner Michael and Tara Nan. Years later, he met Margaret Christian and they were wed in 1995. In 2013, Maggie became ill, and Mike was by her side until her last day in October of 2013. In 1969 Mike began working as a state bank examiner in Topeka, Kansas. He moved back to Courtland, Kansas in 1971 to begin a career at the Swedish-American State Bank with his father, Herb. He spent the rest of his life giving back to his community through his service to the people of Courtland and the surrounding area. Mike worked in all aspects of the bank, and eventually served as a member of the Independent Community Bankers of America – Rural/Agriculture Committee. He finished his career as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer at the Swedish American State Bank and President of the Johnson Insurance Agency. Mike loved taking time to connect with his family and friends. He was an avid golfer, had a passion for music, and was a devoted fan of the University of Oklahoma. He was a member of Courtland Lodge No 211 AF & AM, Scottish Rite, Knights Templar, Isis Shrine Temple and Royal Order of Jesters. He was a faithful member of Ada Lutheran Church, Kackley, KS for over forty years. He will forever be remembered by his brother Gregory K. Johnson, DDS and wife Mary Ann, Parkville, MO; three children, Travis Johnson and wife Katrina, Wichita, Tanner Johnson and wife Kathy and children Ella and Samuel, Courtland, Tara Renze and husband Scott and children Ben and Jack, Leawood; step children Erin Schaffer and husband Brett and children Casey and Kinser, Spearville, Jamie Blacklock and husband Curt and children Colt and Waylon, Dundurn, Saskatchewan.
Funeral services will be held at Ada Lutheran Church in Courtland, Kansas on Saturday, September 19 th at 10:00 AM with Pastor Tom Kamprath officiating. Michael’s family will be receiving family and friends at the Courtland Art Center in Courtland, Kansas on Friday evening from 5:00-7:00 PM. Memorials may be made to the Pike Valley Foundation Fund c/o Swedish American State Bank. Tibbetts-Fisher Funeral Home, Belleville, Kansas is in charge of these arrangements.
