Max Albert Scofield, son of Julia Belle Weaver and Percy Floyd Scofield was born February 21, 1920, on the family farmstead north of Belleville and died in Belleville Wednesday, June 14, 2017, at the age of 97 years. He attended Willowdale rural grade school and Belleville High School graduating in 1937. He worked as a mechanic and driver for Ferguson Oil Company in Belleville before moving to Wichita where he worked for Boeing Aircraft. On October 8, 1939 he was united in marriage to June Elyea, and to this union four children Steven, Susan, Samuel, and Sidney were born. In 1943 he was called into military service serving in the Army Air Corp, Pacific Theater, through the end of World War II. The B-29 in which he was a turret gunner flew 23 missions from the island of Tinian to Japan. Following this service he and June moved to their farm home south of Rydal where he farmed and raised his family. Max was a good steward of the land and took pride in his livestock and crops. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, singing in choir and serving on committees, a member of Masonic Lodge #129, and had been a school board member of Central District #9. He was an American Red Cross blood donor giving regularly to the bloodmobile in addition to giving at the hospital when called to do so. He delighted in spending time with his grandchildren and was proud to have a complete baseball team of nine great-grandsons. He was an avid pitch player with the family. Max was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and all of his siblings: Elton, Ivan, Paul, Velma, Vera, Edith, and Elwin. He will be forever remembered by his children and spouses Steve and Jewelda Scofield, Belleville, Susan and Lynn Tolley, Manhattan, Sam and Rhonda Scofield, Smith Center, and Sid and Pam Scofield, Belleville; his grandchildren and great grandchildren Staci and Rhen Marshall, Mason and Morgan of Blythewood, South Carolina, Sheri and Todd Hartley, Tucker and Tate of Maywood, Nebraska, Greg and Dana Scofield, Max and Cooper of Austin, Texas, Mindy and Dan Ott, Peyton, Prosper, and Harvest of Kansas City, Missouri, and Sara Scofield of Overland Park, Kansas, and one sister-in-law Ellen Scofield, Belleville. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and a multitude of friends.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 27, 2017, at the First United Methodist Church, Belleville, Kansas with Pastor Emily Meckley officiating. Burial will be in the Belleville City Cemetery with military rites by the Army Honor Guard from Fort Riley, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the First United Methodist Church, Belleville, or the Meadowlark Hospice, Clay Center, are suggested. Visitation will be Monday, June 26 from 1:00pm to 8:00pm at Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home, Belleville who is in charge of arrangements.
