Marianna Hanson, age 78 of Scandia, Kansas, died Tuesday, May 27, 2014. She was born April 14, 1936, in Manhattan, Kansas to Rex and Helen (Gunter) Ward. Her family moved to Scandia and she graduated from Scandia High School with the Class of 1954. Marianna lived 55 years in Wichita, Kansas where she was employed by Cessna Aircraft, owner of Mutt n Jeff’s bar and grill, and retired from Dillard’s department store before moving back to Scandia in 2009, where she and Harold embraced life to the fullest. She was active in several different groups locally including the Legion Auxiliary. Marianna was a passionate dog lover who would take a stray in at the drop of a hat. She continually gave stray dogs a great life and the joke among the family was to come back as a stray dog. Survivors: husband, Harold, Scandia; children, Doug (Kim) Kempkes, Kenny Kempkes, Valerie (Paul) Skladzien; stepchildren, Randy Hanson, who preceded her in death; Greg Hanson, Karen (Kevin) Crabtree, Kristy (Mike) Sandbo all of Wichita; 6 grandchildren; Kenny Kempkes Jr. Joshua Henning, Amy Kempkes, Jarus Henning, Veronica Kempkes, Lance Kempkes, 6 step grandchildren; Tony Skladzien, Clint Hanson, Kylee Crabtree, Garrett Crabtree, Kailyn Sandbo, Easton Sandbo, 5 great-grandchildren; Angel Kempkes, Cody Nichols, Kale Nichols, Jaxton Henning, Cash Henning; brother, Allen "Monk" (Deeann) Ward of Hays, niece Annie Diederich of Topeka and nephew A.J. Ward of Hays. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 31, 2014 at the Amana Lutheran Church, Scandia with Pastor Thomas Kamprath officiating. Burial was in Riverview Cemetery, Scandia. Memorials may be made to Scandia Legion Auxiliary or Wichita Humane Society. Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral, Belleville, Kansas was in charge of these arrangements.
