Lorine Anna Becker Gleue, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother passed away at the age of 99 on March 8th, 2025 at her home, where she lived with her son David and his wife Patricia. Preceding her in death were her parents; her four brothers, Ralph, Marvin, Victor, and Wallace and two sisters, Lucille and Carolyn; son Steven; and husband Fred Gleue. Lorine was 10 years old when her mother died while giving birth to her eighth child, Myrtle Grace, who survives Lorine. Her older sister Lucille played a large role in helping Lorine through her growing-up years.
Lorine was born on February 12, 1926 to Bertha and Otto Becker in Lucas, Kansas. She married Fred Gleue in 1947 and they lived the majority of their married life in Belleville, KS, where Fred worked as a soil conservationist with the federal government. To this union three children were born: David Gleue (Patricia), Steven Gleue (deceased) and Paul Gleue.
Lorine and Fred were very proud of their grandchildren and great grandchildren. Their three grandchildren included Matthew Gleue (Karen), Lindsey O’Brien (Zane) and Jama Gleue (son of Steven and Arlene). Their great grandchildren include Skyler, Preston, Spencer, and Asher Gleue, and Frederick “Fritz” O’Brien.
Lorine grew up in the Lutheran church, was a strong Christian, and even as her memory failed, she never failed to say her traditional “Come Lord Jesus” prayer before every meal. She had a deep faith in God and continued to read and study scripture as long as she could see well enough, sometimes well into the night.
Lorine started teaching after high school graduation in one-room school houses in Coffey and Anderson counties. Later, after raising her sons to high school age she went on to get her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Fort Hays State University and taught remedial reading skills in Washington County schools until her retirement.
Besides teaching, she was involved in one of her early passions, which was writing poetry. She was a member of Kansas Author’s Club and won many awards for outstanding achievement in poetry. Other areas of interest were playing piano, quilting, and weaving rugs from scraps of her sons’ worn out clothes.
Lorine was very goal oriented and also had a desire to travel. She and Fred traveled to all the states in the union and to countries in every continent except South America and Antarctica.
Lorine grew up in the Great Depression of the 1930s and faced a lot of adversities in her life, but she never let those things dampen her spirits. She was kind, patient, cheerful and grateful. She almost never complained and rarely failed to express thanks for the meals that were prepared for her. Sometimes she would leave little notes expressing her gratitude.
