LaVerne George Hanel, son of Clarence W. & Katie (Morgan) Hanel, was born on November 25, 1927, on the farm near Munden, Kansas. LaVerne grew up on the farm, and attended Tabor Grade School.
On August 13, 1949, LaVerne married Peggy Danielson, and to this union five children were born. LaVerne and Peggy were later divorced, and LaVerne remarried Evelyn Mae (Mahan) Hanel on September 21, 1974.
LaVerne worked for the street department for the City of Belleville, and following his retirement, he enjoyed landscaping, mowing, and caring for lawns around Belleville.
LaVerne was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles of Belleville, and he was a proud member of Alcoholics Anonymous, celebrating his sobriety anniversary yearly with his family. LaVerne was also a proud member of the Belleville Wesleyan Church.
In his free time, LaVerne enjoyed gardening, working in his shop, woodworking, and spending time with his family.
LaVerne passed away in Belleville on August 22, 2020, at the age of 92 years, 8 months and 28 days.
LaVerne was preceded in death by his parents, his former wife Peggy, his wife Evelyn in December 2019, his brother Eugene in March 2020, and daughter in law Sue “Cathy” Hanel in May 2010.
Left to cherish his memories are his children; daughters Barbara Mitchell of Waco, Texas; Diane Woodman and her husband Marlin of Belleville; Verna “Joyce” Roberts and her friend Larry Deherrea of Bellmead, Texas; sons Alan Hanel of Belleville and James Hanel of Waco, Texas. LaVerne is also survived by eight grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 28, 2020, from 9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home in Belleville, where the family will greet friends from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm.
Graveside funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2020, at 10:00 a.m., at Tabor Cemetery, rural Munden, with Pastor Mark McGregor officiating.
Memorials are requested to the Family’s Choice, to be designated at a later date, and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
