Kay Ellen Burger, 58, of Belleville passed away Mar.9, 2013 at Manhattan, KS. She was born February 12, 1955, to Peter and Mona (Winder) Kennedy at Sault Ste. Marie, MI. Services are 11:00 am Thursday, March 14 at the Central Christian Church in Belleville with Pastor Mark Imel officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Wednesday at Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home. Private family burial will be in the Belleville City Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to the family for use for Martin's education.
Kay obtained her education from Paradise High School, graduating in 1973. She continued her education at Kansas State University, graduating with a degree in English and Physical Education. During her college years, she was part of KSU volleyball, track and one of the first women's basketball teams. She was an advocate for the title IX program and has even published many articles to show her support for women in sports. After college she continued to work on the KSU campus for 17 years. In April of 1997 she was appointed as the Director of Student Records at Cloud County Community College in Concordia. She held various job positions in the community while most recently working for Scott Specialties and at the Bel Villa restaurant. Over the last several years Kay spent most of her time as a Den Leader for the Boy Scouts of America Pack 56 and Troop 56. Kay and her family were awarded the family of the year award in 2009 and 2012. When she was not at Boy Scout functions or cheering on one of her local sports teams, especially basketball, you could find her carrying on a conversation with family and friends as she was tatting away on her next project.
On January 19, 1980 she married William "Bill" LeRoy Burger, son of Clint and Dorothy Burger of Belleville. Bill preceded her in death on March 30, 2008. Others left to cherish her memory are 2 sons; Martin Guy Burger of Belleville, and Clinton "CL" Loy Burger and wife Linda of Hoyt; her daughter, Liane Austin and her husband Jim of New Orleans; 6 grandchildren, Jayme, Colby, and Zachery Burger and Aubreanna, Jesse, and Rayne Austin; her parents, Peter and Mona Kennedy of Luray; and 2 brothers, Bill Kennedy of Luray, and Charles Kennedy and wife Kathy of Olathe; her father and mother-in-law Clint and Dorothy Burger of Belleville; 3 sisters-in-law, Linda Holl of Belleville, Rebecca Brown and husband Bob of Belleville and Alice Carlow and Husband Danny of Hoyt; and also many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Kay will forever live in our hearts and may we all rest assured that we have been given another angel to watch over us.
