Jeanne Mathy

July 20, 1930 — February 9, 2020

Jeanne Marie Mathy, 89, of Belleville, died Sunday, February 9th, 2020 surrounded by her 5 children, at Republic County Hospital. She was born July 20th, 1930, in Concordia, to Abner Trembly Sr. and Blanche Bessette. Jeanne had two siblings - a brother Abner Jr. and a sister Elizabeth Josephine (“Jo”). Both siblings have preceded Jeanne in death. During Jeanne’s childhood, their family moved to Paola for Abner Sr’s job. She attended Ursuline Academy for high school and graduated in 1948. After high school, she attended Marymount College to become a nurse. Jeanne spent many years after college working as a nurse at various places in Washington and Republic Counties. She ended her career as an in-home care nurse for the Belleville Health Department. Jeanne truly loved caring for others.

Jeanne married her first husband Donald “Gooch” Moore on November 24th, 1951. They had four children together...Linda, Mary, Larry and Donald (Donnie). After Gooch’s death in 1970, she then married Donald Mathy in 1972. In 1974, they welcomed a child of their own, Mark. Don and Jeanne spent many years together in Morrowville, KS after their marriage. In 1987, Jeanne and her family moved to Belleville to give their son Mark an opportunity to attend a slightly larger school. She loved all of her kids equally and with all of her heart, but she definitely spoiled her youngest. Once Mark graduated high school and they both had retired, Don and Jeanne moved back to Morrowville. They enjoyed their retirement together and spent a lot of time traveling with their camper. They eventually started spending their winters in the southern part of the country which led to purchasing a small trailer in Alamogordo, NM. They enjoyed a number of winters there together and tended to arrive in Alamogordo after Thanksgiving and returned home in the spring.

As the struggles of aging progressed, Don and Jeanne moved back to Belleville to be closer to the necessities of life, as well as to have easier access to health care. When Don could no longer drive long distances due to his glaucoma, they had to stop traveling south for the winter. Still, they had a great home in Belleville that allowed them to continue to enjoy each other’s company. In the winter of 2012, Jeanne fell at home, shattered her right shoulder, and had to spend some time in the hospital to recover. Shortly after her fall, Don was diagnosed with cancer and joined Mom in the hospital. They shared a room together in long-term care until Don passed away on May 3rd, 2012. After Don’s death, Jeanne moved to Country Place in Belleville, where she spent the remainder of her years on Earth.

Jeanne will be remembered for many things. She was a caring nurse and an amazing cook. Those who knew her well would say she would tell you what she thought exactly as she saw it. She was honest as the day is long and a straight-shooter if there ever was one. But what she will be remembered for most is the love she gave her family. She was a Mother, a Grandmother and a Great-Grandmother - all roles she deeply cherished. She cared about others and showed her love all the way up to her dying day, caring more about her kids getting some rest than how sick she was herself. That’s just who she was. And we will never forget her.
