Huetta May Spafford Derowitsch was born April 2, 1932 on the farm home place in Rose Creek Township, Republic County, 3 miles west of Munden, KS. She passed away May 11, 2015 at the age of 83 years, 1 month and 9 days, in Salina, KS. Huetta was the daughter of Hugh Alfred Spafford and Lucy May McPeek Spafford. She received her education at Whitelock Rural District #90, Belleville Grade School and Junior High School graduating from Belleville High School in 1950. She attended Kansas State Teachers College at Emporia, KS to receive a Provisional Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education. She taught school at Excelsior Rural School District #66 and at Belleville East Elementary. On November 25, 1951 she was united in marriage to Max Donald Derowitsch. To this union four children were born. Huetta held offices in EHU, HDU, FCE, UMW, District UMW, Republic County Council, and Ruth Circle. She was a member of the United Methodist Church. For decades she participated in Liberty Rose Creek 4-H Club as a community leader. Huetta belonged to the Munden Weekly Bible Study, Living Life After Loss Group, Community Card Club, and the Derowitsch Birthday Coffee Club. She was a life member of the Mayflower Society as she is a descendant of John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley. Huetta was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, son Jeffrey Lynn Derowitsch; her grandparents Fitch Chipman Spafford, Christina Watson Spafford, Lewis Martin McPeek, Margret McElroy McPeek; brothers and sister's-in-law: Glen Eugene and Wilma Kuhlman Spafford; Gail Dean and Peggy Slate Spafford. She will be forever remembered by her daughters, Mona Jean Derowitsch Svoboda and husband David E. Svoboda of Belleville, KS and Melinda Jo Derowitsch Hamilton and husband James C. Hamilton of Fort Collins, CO; son Jonathan Max Derowitsch of Garland, TX; granddaughters Kimberly Vel Svoboda Lapo and husband Brandon J. Lapo, Manhattan, KS and Krystol May Svoboda Frydendall and husband Matthew S. Frydendall of Topeka, KS; grandson Michael David Svoboda and wife Misty Breland Svoboda of Belleville, KS; granddaughter Kara Louise Svoboda of Manhattan, KS; step-granddaughter Kriss Hamilton Melaragno and husband Dan Melaragno of Loveland, CO; step-grandson Thomas James Hamilton and wife Kristi Haglund Hamilton of Arvada, CO; great grandchildren: Tristan Nicole Svoboda, Belleville, KS; Kalee Mariah Svoboda, Belleville, KS; Tate Warren Lapo, Manhattan, KS; Laney May Frydendall, Topeka, KS; Connor Allen Svoboda, Belleville, KS; Jude Arlen Lapo, Manhattan, KS; Logan Milo Frydendall, Topeka, KS; Lexie Kae Frydendall, Topeka, KS; Tyce Howland Lapo, Manhattan, KS; Lilah Jean Frydendall, Topeka, KS; Jenner Elizabeth Lapo, Manhattan, KS; Lucy Pearl Frydendall, Topeka, KS; step-great granddaughters, Alysha Kay Melaragno, Loveland, CO; Gianna Marie Melaragno, Loveland, CO; and Zoie Jane Hamilton, Arvada, CO; sister's-in-law Virleen Mumm, Chester, NE; Catherine Derowitsch, Belleville, KS; Bernita Donaldson and brother-in-law Don Donaldson, Fort Wayne, IN; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a community of dear friends. Funeral services were held Monday, May 18, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church, Belleville, Kansas with Pastor Emily Meckley officiating. Burial was in the Belleville City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Church. Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home assisted the Derowitsch family with these arrangements.
