Evelyn M. (Mahan) Hanel was born on May 24, 1922, near Scandia, Kansas. She was one of three children born to John and Idona (Wheatley) Mahan. Evelyn grew up near Scandia, and attended Scandia schools.
Evelyn married Wesley Noel Persinger on February 7, 1940, and to this union, seven children were born. Wesley passed away in 1971, and she married Laverne Hanel on September 21, 1974, in Belleville, and became the stepmother of five children.
Outside of the home, Evelyn worked as a C.N.A., and was very proud of her nursing job and responsibilities. She also enjoyed gardening, bingo, fishing and camping, and she loved collecting angels.
Evelyn passed from this life Sunday, December 15, 2019 at the Belleville Health Care Center at the age of 97 years. She is preceded in death by her parents, first husband Wesley, sons Lynn “Arnold” Persinger in 1988, Wesley “Corky” Persinger in 1996, her daughter Diane Howe in 2017. She is also preceded in death by her stepdaughter-in-law Sue “Cathy” Hanel in 2010, stepson-in-law John Robert in 1998, brothers Jack Mahan and Harold Mahan.
Left to cherish her memories are husband Laverne Hanel of the home; children: Lyndal Frybarger and her husband Donald of Belleville, Faylon Persinger and his wife Sheila of Belleville, Larry Persinger of Belleville, Arlis Gene Persinger and his wife Willeta of Hutchinson, son-in-law Daryl Howe of Bellevlle, stepdaughter Barbara Mitchell of Waco, Texas, stepdaughter Diane Woodman and her husband Marlin of Belleville, stepson Alan Hanel of Belleville, stepson James Hanel of Waco, Texas, stepdaughter Verna “Joyce” Robert of Waco, Texas. Evelyn is also survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, great-great-great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, December 18, 2019, from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home in Belleville, where family will greet friends from 5:00pm to 7:00pm.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, December 19, 2019, at 2:00 pm, at Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home in Belleville, with burial following at Tabor Cemetery, rural Munden.
