Ethlyn Guinelda Smith was born to Marion and Eunice (Ireland) Lyons in Superior, Nebraska on February 13, 1929 and passed from this life Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at Broadstone Memorial Hospital, Superior, Nebraska at the age of 82 years, 6 months, and 3 days. Ethlyn attended school in Superior graduating with the class of 1946. She attended Stormont Vail Nursing School in Topeka, Kansas and worked as a nurse in Topeka, Wichita, and Superior. On March 8, 1948 she was united in marriage to Jack Smith in Fairbury, Nebraska. To this union three sons were born, Thomas, Marlin, and Kent. They briefly lived in Wichita, Kansas then purchased a farm north of Republic, Kansas and still resided there. She worked at the bank in Byron, Nebraska for twenty years. Ethlyn had a great love for music, playing the violin and piano. She played the piano and sang in the choir in her church. She also had a love of knitting, crocheting and loved to garden and help out on the farm. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Knitting Club. Ethlyn was preceded in death by her parents Marion and Eunice Lyons, brothers Loren, Vynn, Darrell, and Marion Lyons; sisters Darlene Ginn, Velda Arnold, and Theda Stolley; and her-in-laws Grover and Dora Smith. She will be forever remembered by her husband Jack, of 63 years, Republic; sons Thomas (Katie) Smith, Berthoud, CO, Marlin (Judy) Smith, Chester, NE, and Kent (Jean) Smith, Belleville, KS; granddaughters Cathy (Lyle) Weber, Dorchester, NE, Lisa (Mark) Rickman, Thornton, CO, and Lori (Brad) Hogan, Cortland, NE; grandsons Lucas and David Smith, Belleville, KS; great grandchildren Ryan & Haley Weber, Cassidy, Cooper, and Cody Hogan, Samantha, Wyatt, and Paisley Rickman; her brother Neil Lyons, Wenatchee, WA; sister-in-law Betty Lyons, Hastings, NE; brother and sister-in-law Arnold and Betty Smith, Superior, NE; many other relatives and friends. Services were held Friday, August 19, 2011 at the United Methodist Church, Republic, Kansas with Pastor Roger Walls officiating. Burial was in Lake Cemetery rural Republic. Music was provided by Charlotte Seybold and Randy Paugh. Casket bearers were Lucas Smith, David Smith, Lyle Weber, Mark Rickman, Brad Hogan, Jim Smith, Butch Lyons, and Calvin Seybold. Memorials may be made to the Church. Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home, Belleville, Kansas was in charge of these arrangements.
