Lannie Lee Hanel was born on May 17, 1947, at Patterson Memorial Hospital in Belleville, Kansas, the son of William Arnold and Olive Grace (Houdek) Hanel. Lannie grew up on the family farm, and always had a love of horses and cattle. He attended Agenda schools and loved playing 6 man football for the Agenda Huskies, graduating in 1965. Following high school, Lannie attended Kansas State University, graduating in 1971 with his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine.
In 1970, he married Kathy Craig, and to this union, two daughters were born, Kasey & Kelly. Dr. Hanel started his veterinary career in Courtland in 1971. He opened his own practice at its current location just north of Courtland, in 1977. In 1985 Lannie remarried Sue Macy, and to this union a son, Brock, was born. In 2007, Lannie remarried Tyra Frye.
In his young adult years, Lannie enjoyed competing in the rodeo arena, team roping and steer wrestling. He loved spending time outdoors. When he wasn’t working you would find him relaxing at the cabin on the lake or playing a round of golf. Lannie was an avid hunter and fisherman. Not only did he hunt and fish locally, he was blessed to travel the United States, and even to Canada to partake in the pastimes he loved. He passed his love of the great outdoors on to his kids and grandkids, taking every opportunity he could, to spend time enjoying it with them. His family was a source of pride for Lannie. If there was a game or competition his kids or grandkids were competing in, you could find him on the sidelines cheering them on. He worked hard through out his life to leave a legacy that would live on in them.
Lannie passed away at the Republic County Hospital on June 24, 2021, with his children at his bedside, at the age of 74 years, 1 month and 7 days.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and wives Sue and Tyra.
